What is Reiki?

If you’ve landed here, you’ve probably been on an exploratory journey—wanting to deepen your spiritual knowledge or to try something different than Western medicine alternatives.

Let’s paint a big picture overview of what Reiki is, how it works, and some of its benefits.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of alternative therapy that is based on the principle of channeling healing energy, or here at Modern Reiki we call it “divine light,” into the body. This practice originated in Japan in the early 20th century and has since become popular around the world.

Reiki is a Japanese term that translates to "universal life force energy." It is believed that this energy flows through all living things and can be channeled to promote healing and balance in the body, mind and spirit. Reiki practitioners use their hands to transfer this energy to their clients, helping to bring attention to spaces that are stagnant and restore the natural flow of energy in the body.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki works by balancing the energy centers, or chakras, in the body. These centers are believed to be connected to various organs and systems in the body, and when they are stagnant, it can lead to physical, emotional, and spiritual imbalances. By using their hands to channel energy into these centers, Reiki practitioners can help to clear stagnant energy and restore balance to the body.

During a Reiki session, the client lies down or sits comfortably while the practitioner places their hands on or near various parts of the body. The practitioner may use a series of hand positions or focus on specific areas that need attention.

The client may feel and experience a variety of sensations, including a warmth or tingling sensation as the energy is transferred, seeing varying colors or bright light with the eyes gently closed, having memories be recalled, new visions or ideas drop in, or release through tears, deep breaths and sighs.

Every single session that you experience with a practitioner will be different, depending on what your body needs.

Sessions may also be done remotely by a practitioner over Zoom or any other virtual meeting platform. At Modern Reiki, we offer both remote and in-person sessions.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Reiki has been shown to have a number of benefits for physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Some of these benefits include:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety: Reiki has been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety by promoting relaxation and reducing tension in the body.

  • Improved sleep: Reiki can help improve sleep by promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels.

  • Pain relief: Reiki has been shown to help relieve pain by reducing inflammation and promoting healing.

Becoming a student and a Level 1 practitioner of Reiki is the foundation for any deep self-healing, as well as an invitation to open up your own intuitive gifts. I personally see it as the ultimate self-development crash course.

By channeling universal life force energy into the body, Reiki practitioners can help restore the natural flow of energy. Whether you are looking to reduce stress and anxiety, relieve pain, or improve your overall well-being, Reiki is worth exploring as a complementary therapy and an immensely transformational topic to study.
